Salt and Grit Solutions Ltd supply red, rock salt.
We call this de-icing salt red salt because of its colour but it is also known as brown salt, or more commonly Rock Salt. When people speak about the roads being gritted it is actually rock salt that is being spread, and not grit. Small deposits of grit/marle are collected when the salt is mined and this gives the salt its distinctive, red/brown colour. It can leave a little residue one used but with an attractive price tag it is a popular option for large areas, such as car parks, road etc. It is also great for prolonged use – when areas need to be gritted for long periods of time.
Why use de-icing rock salt?
Red salt is an effective de-icing salt. As with our white de-icing salt, you can use red salt in advance of bad weather conditions to prevent frost and ice forming. It is also used during periods of lower temperatures to help melt and thaw ice. Rock salt is sourced within the UK making it the most economical option for bigger areas. You can easily identify areas that have already been gritted (salted!) and this helps to prevent over-use and wastage.
